Nexuiz is an old-school, quake-like, free FPS game you can easily install on Linux. It was Initially released in and infos about it are slowly disappearing from the internet as forums and such dies It's a pretty fun game and peoples are still playing it! So I'll explain how to setup a dedicated server tested with ubuntu server on a Digital Ocean droplet, but it should also work on ubuntu desktop.
How do I install Xonotic?
1. Install the game and the server
Please note that the information here is currently outdated! Some people asked for an easy setup guide for the dedicated server. This guide will have several posts, one for each server. Windows, linux, mac if someone helps with that.. Then i will post some more and detailed infos and tips. Please notice that i will try to keep this up to date so i can not promise that everything in here will work with older versions. I'm once more in the process of updating this guide. The current version of Nexuiz is 2.
2. Configuration file
There is no need to install Xonotic! The zip file you downloaded from the homepage has everything. All binaries to run the game on Linux, Windows and macOS are inside of it. Just unzip the archive and run the appropriate executable for your OS. For example, on Windows or macOS you can start the game by double-clicking the Xonotic logo. On Linux you can run xonotic-linux-glx.
Game server configuration allows a server adminstrator to provide varying and customized experiences. There are numerous settings and console variables cvars for Xonotic, however they can be searched in-game using apropos , or out of game using cacs. There are two types of servers: listen and dedicated. Listen servers are spawned by a game client and are available only for the host's playing session. Dedicated servers are intended to be persistently available. This section assumes network configuration such as port forwarding have already been done.
