I rebelled against what people thought of me through bold statements, loud outfits and the daring interiors I created. I tried to understand myself by challenging those around me. And when I realised this, I was struck by a question that stumped me - who actually am I? Recently, I heard about a charity which helps orphans find their blood relatives and organises meetings for the children to talk to them, get to know them and learn about themselves in the process. But even this introduction gives the child a starting point. Something similar happened to me when I moved to the US. At first it felt like I had to choose one - Russia or America. For me, that was part of accepting myself: I stopped expecting people to judge me, praise me or admire me and stopped trying to get people to like me.
